“Resources are always limited” – I picked this phrase from the book – “Mountains beyond Mountains”. In International health, this saying has great force. It lays behind most cost-effectiveness analysis. It is often meant “Be Realistic”. But it is usually uttered without any recognition of how, in any given place, resources have come to be limited. Strictly speaking, all resources everywhere are limited. But they are less limited now than before in human history. That is, medicine now has the tools for stopping many plagues, and no one can say there isn’t enough money in the world to pay for them.
When resources are limited, can few committed individuals make a difference? Yes, Dr. Paul Farmer along with many of his committed friends and family, through Partners in Health, have achieved just that in solving global health problems through a clear-eyed understanding of the interaction of politics, wealth, social systems, and disease.
